An unpeated expression of Caol Ila and the twelfth released for the 2017 Diageo special releases series. Aged for 18 years in refill American oak hogsheads, natural cask strength and the oldest expression of Caol Ila so far in this series. Once a year the distillery swaps out its peated regimen for unpeated production in the "Highland Style" Delightfully rich, with a fruitiness usually just hinted at in Caol Ila, it's a fine dram that's evenbetter with a drop of water. Nose: Closed and tight at first , not giving much away. Hints of peppery spice and milk chocolate pennies. Rich caramel and dark chocolate dipped orange. Palate: Initially follows the nose in the gentle stakes then the heat ramps up with that pepper spice prickle. Then soothing chocolate notes with a marshmallow sweetness. Smoke too but a gentle peat hit. Finish: Lingering with that pepper spice tingling and dark chocolate orange. Takes time and hides its beauty, but worth exploring.
