Founded by three brothers in the eastern Scotland town of Brechin in 1820, North Port (which was originally called Townhead) ran smoothly for over 100 years before it was mothballed in 1928 following its sale in 1922. It reopened for the two years prior to World War II, before its final run from 1945 until permanent closure in 1983.
Through its lifetime the distillery was known as North Port and/or Brechin, which is reflected in the labelling on the few bottlings that can still be found in Diageo's Rare Malts and Special releases programmes or from independent bottlers.
