Ben Wyvis (named after the huge 3,000 foot mountain which dominates the area) was opened near Dingwall in 1879; it was renamed by a new owner as Ferintosh in 1893, before final closure in 1926. The name Ben Wyvis returned in 1965, when a new malt distillery was built within the massive Invergordon grain distillery; sadly this reinvention barely lasted two years.
Whilst the majority of Ben Wyvis distillery has been dismantled, some of the buildings remain and are now used for housing. Also the Ben Wyvis stills were given a second life; they are now used in the revived Glen Gyle distillery in Campbeltown. Single Malt bottlings have naturally become increasingly scarce.
