Alexander Reid first acquired his distilling licence for Macallan in 1824, and as such is one of the first to be licensed in Speyside. Originally Macallan used water from Ringorm Burn, however it is now retrieved from the River Spey of which the company own a mile stretch purely for their supply! The barley Macallan Whisky use comes from the Tamdhu maltings and it is Golden Promise barley. They use this particular barley because it gives a consistent flavour and quality.
Whisky Macallan gets its very winey taste because they only ever use Spanish oak sherry casks. Macallan have a huge variety of single malts available and they are also amongst the top five best-selling single malts in the world. Macallan also has a great visitor centre.
