The Isle of Arran is the largest island in the Clyde estuary and is situated between the coast of Ayrshire and the eastern side of Kintyre. Arran single malt is created at Lochranza distillery, at the northern end of the island, near the slipway for the ferry to Kintyre and is overlooked by Lochranza Castle. Lochranza distillery was the first licenced distillery to appear on the island since the closure of the facility at Lagg in 1837, although many illegal stills operated in the intervening period.
Following the round of closures in the 1980s, Arran was the second new distillery to open in the 1990s Scotland after Kininvie. The first spirit ran at Arran in 1995, with an inaugural release appearing in 1998. Since then we have seen a whole range of exciting new bottlings as the spirit matured to greater ages. The distillery added two additional stills in 2017 and we have now seen the release of a 25 year old bottling. A peated version, Machrie Moor has since been launched and a completely new distillery, Lagg has been built by Isle of Arran Distillers at the southern end of the island which will produce a peated Whisky going forward.
