Wine maker notes Among Tuscany’s oldest vineyards, Impero Vineyard (meaning “Empire’s Vineyard”) was planted in 1935 by His Royal Highness the Count of Turin, Vittorio Emanuele of Savoy. Terraces hammered out of marly limestone on a steep slope in the middle of the estate make up this famed vineyard. The soil is a mix of clay and gravel, rich in marl and rock, that gives a spectacular minerality to the Sangiovese grapes grown here. The approximately 3 hectares of vineyards are situated at an altitude of 280-300 meters with excellent sun exposure and beneficial breezes. Diurnal temperature variation helps to develop the finest aromas, elegant and complex. To highlight this very special terroir, vinification begins with a very soft and long maceration (one month) to extract the polyphenols that give greater tannins and anthocyanins. To soften the tannins, but without being too invasive and without changing the original perfumes, the wine is aged in large barrels for 24 months and in bottle for several months. The wine is not filtered, to preserve all typical varietal notes and characteristics of Sangiovese.
Producer Tenuta Sette Ponti lies on historic land in the heart of the Chianti zone at the end of the Via del Monte, known locally as the Via dei Sette Ponti, in a beautiful hidden valley. Named for the seven medieval bridges crossing the Arno River on the road from Arezzo to Florence—one of which, the Ponte Buriano, is perceptible in the right far background of Leonardo DaVinci’s Mona Lisa—the estate has a storied history. But it has been the dedication and savvy of luxury goods entrepreneur Antonio Moretti that has transformed the 750-acre estate into a multifaceted farm property that is today one of Tuscany’s most innovative, quality-driven producers of world-class Super Tuscans. Tenuta Sette Ponti’s first release was the 1998 vintage Crognolo, named after a wild bush, Cornus, which grows on the estate. The estate’s second release, Oreno, is named after a small river running through the estate.
