Wine maker notes The FRONHOLZ is a very special piece of land with great personality! Its location, as a hill apart from the main Vosges hill range, on the top and South-West facing side of the Epfig hill, makes it special. This is a very rare exposure for vines in Alsace, the whole vineyard being on the East-facing slopes of the Vosges foothills. As a result, there is a better photosynthesis, preserved acidity and aromas that are never overripe or exotic due to an intense and prolonged sunlight at the end of the day, and a very good air flow. These climatic particularities make it a very well adapted place for late harvests. The soil is made of white sands and quartz stones in the upper part, and clay deeper down. It brings a unique combination of richness and minerality to the wines. The vines are grown using biodynamic principles.
Other text ”The vintner is like the sun for the vines,” he writes in his annual vintage report. ”The sky is the limit in a vintner’s mind!,” he wrote. Far beyond the soil and the climate, it is ”the energy of men and women who shape the vines. ”
Food pairing While it has a high sugar level the concentration is barely felt in the mouth, thus it has a wide range of food matching: as an aperitif with dried fruits, on foie gras, blue cheeses, fruity desserts, or even as an after-dinner drink. Aging potential: 25 years.
Producer To call Andre Ostertag a revolutionary winemaker is to tell just half the story. He is a pioneer, certainly, but also an ardent environmentalist (as demonstrated in both his wine and his sculpture, another passion). After training in Burgundy, Andre returned to the family domaine in Alsace with renewed zeal: he lowered yields considerably and introduced viticultural and vinification techniques from other regions to his own home ground. The 1996 vintage marked his first collaboration with KLWM, and the following year he brought biodynamic viticulture to his fourteen hectares of vineyards, including his flagship parcel in the Muenchberg Grand Cru.
