The history of Chateau Rauzan-Segla dates back to 1661 when Pierre de Rauzan acquired the estate. Over the years, generations of the Rauzan family successfully built the reputation of their wines. When Thomas Jefferson, a highly regarded wine connoisseur visited the region, he placed an order for several cases. The reputation of the estate was solidified in 1855 when Chateau Rauzan-Segla was officially recognized as a Second Growth. About half of the 126 acres of vineyards are around the Chateau, but there are additional parcels near Margaux and Brane-Cantenac. The vineyards were planted with Cabernet Sauvignon (54%), Merlot (41%), Petit Verdot (4%) and Cabernet Franc (1%) and the average vine of the vines is 30 years old. Soils at Rauzan-Segla are composed of well-draining, deep and fine gravel. After hand-harvesting and double sorting, the fruit is gently crushed, transferred to stainless steel tanks via gravity and fermented for 5-8 days with pumping over twice per day. Today, Rauzan-Segla is owned by the Wertheimer family of the House of Chanel who hired managing director, John Kolasa from Chateau Latour.
