Producer Michel Gros is the sixth generation of a Burgundian wine dynasty that dates back to 1830. As the eldest of three, Michel began working with his father at the family estate, Domaine Jean Gros, in 1975. Michel founded his own Domaine in 1979 and managed both properties until his father retired in 1995. Upon his fathers death, the estate was divided amongst his three children: Anne-Francoise (Domaine A-F Gros), Bernard (Domaine Gros Frere et Soeur) and Michel (Domaine Michel Gros). Michel inherited the five-acre, 1er Cru monopole Clos des Reas, two parcels in Nuits-St. -Georges, a plot in Vosne-Romanee and another in Hautes Cotes de Nuits. In 1997, the Ecard family entrusted Michel with the management of their properties in Nuits-St. -Georges (including the 1er Crus Vignerondes and Murgers) and Vosne-Romanee; and later, in 2008, a parcel in Hautes Cotes de Nuits. In total, Michel now farms 57. 5 acres, of which 38 are located in the Hautes Cotes de Nuits. Michel tends to use the same viticulture and vinification methods for each vintage. That is not to imply that he is dogmatic, just the opposite. His approach reflects years of working in the vineyards and an intrinsic understand of what works. He is probably best described as a modern traditionalist he is open minded to new ideas as long as they respect the environment and allow clear expression of terroir. He is a humble and passionate vigneron whose wines reflect the depth and class of their individual terroir. In 2002 and 2003 respectively, Michel was named ”Best Red Wine Maker” and awarded ”Best Pinot Noir” at the International Wine Challenge.
