France, Rhône Valley, Hermitage AOC. Domaine de la Chapelle, formerly under the Paul Jaboulet Aîné label, is an iconic estate now managed independently by the Frey family, who have overseen its evolution since acquiring it in 2006. The vineyard’s most famous holding, ‘La Chapelle,’ is named after the small chapel of Saint Christopher that overlooks the steep granite slopes. With vines ranging from 40 to over 100 years old and parcels in the legendary lieux-dits of Le Méal, Les Bessards, Les Greffieux, and Les Rocoules, the domaine combines heritage, precision viticulture, and an unwavering commitment to expressing the distinct character of Hermitage. Wine Description This 100% Syrah presents a deep, almost opaque ruby hue. The nose is strikingly complex, opening with wild forest berries, black cherries, and violets, intertwined with aromas of liquorice, cedar, cured meats, and earthy mushroom. On the palate, it is at once powerful and graceful, with layers of ripe blackberry, red plum, raspberry, and subtle peppery spice. Fine-grained tannins support a core of pure fruit, complemented by notes of wild herbs, graphite, and a gentle mineral lift. The body is full yet finely poised, with freshness carrying through to an exceptionally long, savoury finish. Accolades Jeb Dunnuck – 92 points. Vinous – 92 points. Wine Spectator - 93 points. Food Pairing This wine pairs beautifully with roasted venison, braised lamb shanks, or a classic beef Wellington, where the savoury richness and peppery spice of the Syrah complement the depth of the meat. It also finds harmony alongside wild mushroom risotto or aged Comté cheese. Together, they create an unforgettable dining experience.
