Poggio di Sotto is a highly-regarded 'cult' winery located in Tuscany, Italy, in the subregion of Montalcino. The estate was established in 1989 by Piero Palmucci, who meticulously researched the region's soil and climate to find the ideal location for Sangiovese Grosso grapes. Poggio di Sotto became part of the ColleMassari Wine Estates in 2011, when it was acquired by Claudio Tipa. The winery is known for its traditional winemaking, using natural and non-interventionist methods, including long aging periods in large Slavonian oak barrels and no filtering before release. The vineyards are organically farmed. Wine Description This 100% Sangiovese wine has a deep ruby red colour with garnet reflections. The aroma is intense and complex, offering a sensory profile of red cherry, raspberry, and cassis, along with hints of fragrant wet leaves, woody rosehip, and blue flowers. The palate is pure and fluid, with a tension between astringent orange and creamy mocha. The wine has a graceful harmony and a fine, elegant feel with chalky, silky tannins that are well-integrated and persistent. It is described as a lighter and brighter wine than most, yet it has impressive depth. This wine can be enjoyed over the coming 20 years, with some suggesting a drinking window of 2028-2046. Suggested pairings include classic Tuscan dishes such as wild boar ragu with pappardelle pasta or a Florentine T-bone steak. It also pairs well with aged cheeses like Parmigiano-Reggiano and Pecorino Toscano. The wine's acidity and tannins cut through the richness of these dishes, while its earthy and herbal notes harmonize with the food. A perfect match to enhance the wine's complexity. Vintage Quality The 2018 vintage was considered a more difficult and uneven year in the region. Botrytis, a fungal disease, decimated at least 25% of the harvest. However, thanks to the winemaker's meticulous vineyard work, including a rigorous selection process and low yields, Poggio di Sotto was able to produce a wine that is elegant and well-balanced. The resulting wine is firm and pure, with a graceful balance despite the challenges of the vintage.
