Henschke is one of Australia's oldest family-owned wineries, with a history spanning over 150 years. The family has been making wine since Johann Christian Henschke planted a small vineyard in 1862. The current custodians, fifth-generation winemaker Stephen Henschke and his viticulturist wife, Prue, continue a tradition of handcrafting exceptional wines. Their philosophy is deeply rooted in organic and biodynamic farming to ensure a healthy balance with the natural landscape and the faithful expression of their unique terroir. The 'Peggy's Hill' Riesling is named after a local landmark, a hill located at the top of the range between the villages of Eden Valley and Keyneton. Wine Description The Henschke Riesling 'Peggy's Hill' 2023 is made from 100% Riesling grapes sourced from a selection of longstanding Eden Valley growers. It displays a pale straw colour with green hues. The aromatic profile is fragrant and intense, with notes of frangipani, white rose, almond blossom, lime leaf, white musk, jasmine, and fresh herbs. The palate is pure and concentrated with flavours of lemon rind, lime, and white stone fruit. It is balanced by a fine, mineral acidity and possesses a laser-like focus and excellent length. The winemaking involves fermenting the juice in tanks and bottling post-vintage to preserve the delicate aromatic fruit characters. The optimal drinking window is immediately through to 2033. Food Pairing The wine is a fantastic match for white fish, seafood, and a classic Australian pairing of fresh yabby or prawns. It would also pair well with courgette, asparagus in butter sauce, and a cheese course featuring Emmental. This pairing highlights the wine's depth and character.
