Lagavulin is a single malt Scotch whisky distillery located on the Isle of Islay, in the Islay region of Scotland. The name 'Lagavulin' is an anglicization of the Gaelic lag a'mhuilin, which translates to 'hollow by the mill'. The distillery officially dates back to 1816, although there are records of illicit distillation on the site as far back as 1742. It is now owned by Diageo plc. The Lagavulin 12 Year Old is a single malt Scotch whisky. Lagavulin is known for its slow distillation process, which is the slowest of all Islay whiskies, and for its use of malted barley from Port Ellen Maltings. The production process involves drying the malt over peat fires, which imparts the signature smoky flavour. The spirit is then matured in oak casks, often a combination of first-fill ex-Bourbon and refill casks. This whisky has a bold, smoky character with notes of bonfire smoke, ash, and iodine. The flavour profile can also include sweetness like toffee, honey, and vanilla. Other notes often detected are citrus fruits, black pepper, and hints of roasted coffee beans. It has a long, warming finish with lingering notes of ash and tobacco. The body is typically described as medium with a soft, buttery texture.
