A tiny lot found in the estate of a small Grande Champagne winegrower who had quietly kept this cognac for more than sixty years. In those days growers rarely tracked their barrels precisely enough to claim a vintage â but they always kept a few casks back for themselves and their children, like hidden treasures. . This is one of them: a unicorn asleep at the back of a cellar, one that could so easily have been swallowed into a merchant's stock, and which found its way to us instead. It was secured in 2021, long after the eau-de-vie had been drawn off wood and moved to dame-jeanne â the glass demijohn that stops the clock and holds an old cognac exactly where the grower judged it finished. . Because the aging account was closed at compte 10, the paperwork can only ever say ten years. The glass says otherwise. The obscuration alone â 1. 47% vol. , extremely high for a cognac at 45% â is the fingerprint of decades of cask contact, and the nose confirms what the administration cannot: this is a 1960s distillation, sold and shipped honestly under the only age the law lets us claim. . Tasting Notes. On the nose, this spirit opens quietly, then unfolds: full rancio, walnut and hazelnut skin, dried fig and prune, beeswax and sandalwood, tobacco leaf, and a faint forest-floor earthiness. The alcohol is entirely absorbed into the aromatics. . On the palate, the chalk-driven line of Grande Champagne, wrapped in an oily, almost viscous texture expresses itself with the following: candied citrus peel, saffron, old leather, bitter cocoa. Tannins fully digested; no wood edge remains. . On the finish, extremely long and dry, on rancio and cigar box, closing on the saline-mineral echo typical of the cru's chalk. . Overall, a cognac that has finished its evolution. Not powerful â profound. Best offered neat and unreduced; any dilution flattens the rancio. . Total production: 28 bottles. "Please note that the label images have preliminary placeholder ABVs. The producer sought to ensure maximum accuracy and measured the ABV shortly before bottling, which led to different ABV measurements than the Parhelia label proofs used for this presale. "
